Pasado simple (pretérito indefinido) - ¿Cuándo?

Talking in past is very important for  language students because we are daily  sharing experiences or just talking about what we did during the day or last weekend or a last vacation but it´s very common students get frustrated when they learn the grammar because they have to memorize so many irregular verbs and the rules sometimes do not make any sense. In this post we are going to study preterit (pretérito indefinido ) in context. The following song has examples of regular and irregular verbs in past . Let´s take a look at   the lyric.

¿Cuándo? 

¿Cuándo fue la última vez que viste las estrellas
con los ojos cerrados
y te aferraste como un náufrago a la orilla
de la espalda de alguien?

¿Cuándo fue la última vez que se te fue el amor
por no dejarlo libre?

¿Cuándo fue la última vez
que te besaron tanto
que dijiste mi nombre?

¿Cuándo te ganó el orgullo

First , you notice the singer  keep repeating "¿Cuándo fue la última vez...." (when was the last time ) Many students are not quite sure when to say "fue " or "era" because both can be translate  like "was"... OK, my dear readers, here you can notice when you want to ask :" when was the last time  you did something ? you need to use the verb ser in preterit not in imperfect (bear in mind that ser and ir  are conjugated the same in preterit). So the construction would be :  ¿ Cuándo fue la primera /última vez que + statement in preterit?

For instance 

"¿Cuándo fue la primera vez viajaste a America del sur?" (when was the first time you traveled to South America? 

"¿ Cuándo fue la última vez que estudiante español?" ( when was the last time you studied Spanish?)

Second , this song has plenty examples of regular verbs: 

•  Ganar     ( to win)           ... ¿Cuándo te ganó el orgullo...?
• Besar    (to kiss)         ... te besaron tanto...
• llegar    (to arrive)       ... y llegaste a odiarme?
• olvidar  (to forget)       ... ¿Cuándo olvidaste que el caso ....
• sanarse   ( to heal)      ...se sanó tu herida...
• escoger (to choose)     ...y escogiste el llanto?

Third, you find an irregular verb : sentirse solo/a (to feel alone). The verb "sentirse" is only irregular in the third person (él, ella, usted, ellos, ellas , ustedes). Take a look at  some conjugations:

Nota :

•  Many irregular verbs in present that finish in "_ar " or "_er" they are regular in preterit (indefinido) . For instance: 

Entender- yo no entiendo mucho a  mi profesor vs yo no entendí la explicación  The first statement is in present but the second one is in past.

•  The rule is different when the verbs that finish in "-ir" is irregular in present (sentirse ) they are also irregular in preterite (indefinido) but only in the third person singular (él, ella, usted) and plural (ellos, ellas, ustedes) 

Juan a veces se siente solo vs Juan se sintió muy solo después de tu partida.

Here several combinations with the verb "sentirse": 

• sentirse bien /mal    (to feel good/bad)
• sentirse alegre          ( to feel happy)
• sentirse triste            ( to feel sad) 
• sentirse cansado/a     ( to feel tired ) 

Fourth, the song also show examples of  some irregular verbs.   Let´s take a look at  the conjugation

Nota : "Querer"  usually can be translated like to try in preterit but the  the meaning in the song is different. Here it means   to love. "¿Cuándo fue la última vez que te quisieron tanto?" ( when was the last time you were loved badly? )

Last but not the least. In this song there are example of some tricky verbs like  ver ( to look, to watch , to see)  and  decir ( to say / to tell)

If you know how to conjugate VER, you know the verb DAR ( to give )

Dar: yo di, tu diste, usted dio.... can you finish the conjugation? 

Decir also share the same patter with verbs like conducir ( to drive )  or traer (to bring ). Look:

Conducir: yo conduje, tú condujiste, usted condujo ....

traer : yo traje, tú trajiste, usted trajo...
