Érase que se era- Préterito Imperfecto

Hi, my dear readers. In today´s post I would like to take you to a small trip through the past imperfect ( pretérito imperfecto), I know, I know... You are thinking that you have watched many videos in Youtube that explain how to use the pasts and I bet you have read many other posts or blogs and maybe you still don´t understand when to say era or fue, vivía or viví, but if you start analyzing carefully how natives talk, probably your understanding of the past in Spanish will improve. Reading rules and isolated examples are not enough, you need to put everything in context and what better context that to listen and analyzing lyrics from Spanish songs?

Cartagena de Indias- SSClasespañol

In May you have the opportunity to read a post also related to pretérito imperfecto. In that post we studied the imperfect to talk about description in past with the song Insoportablemente bella. Today I have another song, a classic sung by a particularly important singer called Silvio Rodríguez. With Silvio´s song you will notice how to use imperfect for descriptions but also used as a routine past.

Let´s look

Érase que se era

Eramos una vez un grupo de nueve o diez
Que coincidía cada noche
Una suerte de sueños que hacían cuadrilla
Unos buenos muchachos riendo juntos

In English when you start reading fairy tales to a child, those stories usually start with the phrase " Once upon a time there was/were ..." In Spanish the equivalent is " Erase una vez..." and that is the title of  this song. This expression will lead us to the author´s memories. Precious memories  with his group of  friends. He said " Eramos una vez un

grupo de nueve o diez".  and  he starts telling his story, what they used to do, think or feel. We can read  " Desfilábamos juntos, se hacían poemas Y las calles que buenos gustos tenían" or "De uno en fondo pasábamos Por la misma canción Era uno, eran dos, eran tantos qué sé yo".

Also pay attention time expressions like: cada noche ( Que coincidía cada noche ) or por esa época ( Por esa época se amaba tanto, qué sé yo) They are all indicadors that he is refering to a repetitive action, something that used to happen regulary and maybe it is different in the present. Those are the moment native Spanish speaker use the past imperfect and how about you? what memories do you have from your teen time friendship? or maybe during the collage? what did you guys used to do? how did you used to have fun?

Contesta:

¿ Qué bonito recuerdo tienes de tu época de adolescente? ¿ Qué hacían tú y tus amigos/as para divertirse? ¿ Qué hay de los amigos cuando estabas en la universidad? Qué hacían en los ratos libres?

You can answer in the comment box.

 ¡Hasta la próxima!

Verbo Gustar- ¿ por qué es "me gustas tú" y no " me gusta tú "

Hi, everyone in today´s post I would like  to share one of my favorite song to work in class " Me gustas tú". I like this song because it gaves the chance to practice  verb "Gustar". This verb  can be a tough cookie. Spanish learners need some time to get used to the idea this verb has a different conjugation: only singular or plural (gusta/n)  in addition this verb needs some special pronouns ( a mí me, a ti te, a él/ella le, a nosotros nos , a ellos-as /ustedes les ). But what happens when you like a person and you would like to tell him/her. Well Manu Chao has the answer. Let´s take a look.

ME GUSTAS TÚ de Manu Chao

Me gustan los aviones, me gustas tú
Me gusta viajar, me gustas tú
Me gusta la mañana, me gustas tú
Me gusta el viento, me gustas tú
Me gusta soñar, me gustas tú
Me gusta la mar, me gustas tú

¿Qué voy a hacer? Je ne sais pas
¿Qué voy a hacer? Je ne sais plus
¿Qué voy a hacer? Je suis perdu
¿Qué horas son, mi corazón?

Me gusta la moto, me gustas tú
Me gusta correr, me gustas tú
Me gusta la lluvia, me gustas tú
Me gusta volver, me gustas tú
Me gusta marihuana, me gustas tú
Me gusta colombiana, me gustas tú
Me gusta la montaña, me gustas tú
Me gusta la noche

¿Qué voy a hacer? Je ne sais pas
¿Qué voy a hacer? Je ne sais plus
¿Qué voy a hacer? Je suis perdu
¿Qué horas son, mi corazón?

Doce un minuto

Me gusta la cena, me gustas tú
Me gusta la vecina, me gustas tú
(Radio reloj)
Me gusta su cocina, me gustas tú
(Una de la mañana)
Me gusta camelar, me gustas tú
Me gusta la guitarra, me gustas tú
Me gusta el reggae, me gustas tú

¿Qué voy a hacer? Je ne sais pas
¿Qué voy a hacer? Je ne sais plus
¿Qué voy a hacer? Je suis perdu
¿Qué horas son, mi corazón?

Me gusta la canela, me gustas tú
Me gusta el fuego, me gustas tú
Me gusta menear, me gustas tú
Me gusta la Coruña, me gustas tú
Me gusta Malasaña, me gustas tú
Me gusta la castaña, me gustas tú
Me gusta Guatemala, me gustas tú

¿Qué voy a hacer? Je ne sais pas
¿Qué voy a hacer? Je ne sais plus
¿Qué voy a hacer? Je suis perdu
¿Qué horas son, mi corazón?

As you could notice in the lyrics the rule how to conjugate the verb gustar changes if you express your like directly to a person.

If you feel a crush for someone  and you confess that feeling  to your best friend, in Spanish you would say:

"Me gusta mucho el nuevo chico de la clase." (I like a lot the new boy)
But if you confess directly to the person you feel that crush, you wouldn´t say : "me gusta". you would say : "me gustas". Why?

"Pablo necesito decirte algo... me gustas mucho" ( Pablo, I have something to tell you... I like you)
How do I ask him if he feels the same?
this is the answer: "¿ y yo te gusto?"
As you can see when you are talking directly to a person or a group the conjugation is no more " me/le/ nos...etc gusta or gustan"
Look below, I explain you better.

All examples above are in simple present. In a different post we can discuss the past of this verb.
I hope this post has been useful to understand better how the verb "gustar " works. Let a comment or share this post. See you next time.

Remember to read newspapers, magazines in Spanish or to Listen music  and watch TV in Spanish . You will learn a more realistic Spanish.

Pasado simple (pretérito indefinido) - ¿Cuándo?

Talking in past is very important for  language students because we are daily  sharing experiences or just talking about what we did during the day or last weekend or a last vacation but it´s very common students get frustrated when they learn the grammar because they have to memorize so many irregular verbs and the rules sometimes do not make any sense. In this post we are going to study preterit (pretérito indefinido ) in context. The following song has examples of regular and irregular verbs in past . Let´s take a look at   the lyric.

Lucerna- Suiza. Foto.

y llegaste a odiarme?

¿Cuándo llegó a convencerte
el maldito despecho
que un clavo saca a otro?

¿Cuándo olvidaste que el caso
no es entenderse sino que aceptarse?

¿Cuándo...?

Si se sanó tu herida
Borra también la cicatriz.
Y si un día nos vemos
Haz el favor de contestar.

First , you notice the singer  keep repeating "¿Cuándo fue la última vez...." (when was the last time ) Many students are not quite sure when to say "fue " or "era" because both can be translate  like "was"... OK, my dear readers, here you can notice when you want to ask :" when was the last time  you did something ? you need to use the verb ser in preterit not in imperfect (bear in mind that ser and ir  are conjugated the same in preterit). So the construction would be :  ¿ Cuándo fue la primera /última vez que + statement in preterit?

For instance

"¿Cuándo fue la primera vez viajaste a America del sur?" (when was the first time you traveled to South America?

"¿ Cuándo fue la última vez que estudiante español?" ( when was the last time you studied Spanish?)

In a previous post: "Pretérito imperfecto"  I explained how to use "era"  with a song called "Insoportablemente bella " . I invite you to read that post and  you can  compare that song with the one we are analyzing here.

Second , this song has plenty examples of regular verbs:

  •  Ganar     ( to win)           ... ¿Cuándo te ganó el orgullo...?
  • Besar    (to kiss)         ... te besaron tanto...
  • llegar    (to arrive)       ... y llegaste a odiarme?
  • olvidar  (to forget)       ... ¿Cuándo olvidaste que el caso ....
  • sanarse   ( to heal)      ...se sanó tu herida...
  • escoger (to choose)     ...y escogiste el llanto?

Third, you find an irregular verb : sentirse solo/a (to feel alone). The verb "sentirse" is only irregular in the third person (él, ella, usted, ellos, ellas , ustedes). Take a look at  some conjugations

Verbos terminados en _ AR /_ER /_ IR

Besar (to Kiss)

Escoger (to choose)

Sentirse* + adjetivo/adverbio

Nota :
  •  Many irregular verbs in present that finish in "_ar " or "_er" they are regular in preterit (indefinido) . For instance:
Entender- yo no entiendo mucho a  mi profesor vs yo no entendí la explicación  The first statement is in present but the second one is in past.
  •  The rule is different when the verbs that finish in "-ir" is irregular in present (sentirse ) they are also irregular in preterite (indefinido) but only in the third person singular (él, ella, usted) and plural (ellos, ellas, ustedes)
Juan a veces se siente solo vs Juan se sintió muy solo después de tu partida.

Here several combinations with the verb "sentirse":
  • sentirse bien /mal    (to feel good/bad)
  • sentirse alegre          ( to feel happy)
  • sentirse triste            ( to feel sad)
  • sentirse cansado/a     ( to feel tired )
Fourth, the song also show examples of  some irregular verbs.   Let´s take a look at  the conjugation

     Yo

fui

     Yo

quise

fuiste

besaste

quisiste

Usted

Ustedes

Ustedes

Ellos(as)

Ellos(as)

Nota : "Querer"  usually can be translated like to try in preterit but the  the meaning in the song is different. Here it means   to love. "¿Cuándo fue la última vez que te quisieron tanto?" ( when was the last time you were loved badly? )

Last but not the least. In this song there are example of some tricky verbs like  ver ( to look, to watch , to see)  and  decir ( to say / to tell)

More irregular verbs

Ver

Decir

     Yo

     Yo

Nosotros(as)

Ustedes

Ustedes

Ellos(as)

Ellos(as)

If you know how to conjugate VER, you know the verb DAR ( to give )
Dar: yo di, tu diste, usted dio.... can you finish the conjugation?

Decir also share the same patter with verbs like conducir ( to drive )  or traer (to bring ). Look:
Conducir: yo conduje, tú condujiste, usted condujo ....
traer : yo traje, tú trajiste, usted trajo...

See all the things you can learm from a Spanish song¡¡¡ Let´s practice now:

¿ cuándo fue la última vez que olvidaste las llaves dentro del carro?
¿ cuándo fue la primera vez que besaste a un chico o una chica?
¿ cuándo fue la última vez que alguien te dijo una mentira ?
¿ cuándo fue la primera vez que viste una pelicula de acción?

Can you try more questions???

Don´t forget to leave a comments with your answers or more questions.

Pretérito imperfecto

Clase ELE. Foto: SSClasespañol

When we talked in past in Spanish , we can use different kind of past tenses:Pretérito perfecto (present perfect) ,Pretérito indefinido (simple past), Pretérito Imperfecto (past imperfecto) , Pretérito Pluscuamperfecto ( past pluscuamperfect). That is the reason the past could be very confusing for Spanish students. In this post I give you an example how to use Pretérito imperfecto when we describe in past or talked about feelings or emotions.

Insoportablemente bella
Emmanuel

Let´s take a look to some  verses. When the singer says:  : "Sí, era bella,Sí, era muy bella .Como una rosa.... era orgullosa como una hiedra" They are all examples of appereance and personality description.
Now when he says : " me fingía un amor que jamás lo sentía de veras"Here the actions fingir (to pretend) and Sentir (to feel) are seen like in a process. He is evoked those moments like they were happening now.
It is very common to express feelings and metal process in the past using imperfecto. " Sólo quería sentirse halagada" " Que al abrazarla pensaba que estaba abrazando a una piedra" Again he is evoking those moment like he was feeling them now, like he was watching himself in a movie.

Dear students and readers, all verbs in Spanish can be conjugated either in preterit or imperfect. I encourage you to listen or read real material like news so  you can get familiar how Hispanic explain history or anecdotes in past.
NOTE: English is not my native language, please if you find any mistake, please let me know and I will correct it. Thanks.
